This was literally the most frustrating thing that Teddy had ever tried before in his life. Not even kidding. Which was weird, really. Learning how to change himself had been strangely easy, in some ways. When he was young he figured out the small things. Hair color, build, height. Those were easy, because he was still mostly him. And as he worked at it he got better. Got large and green and claws. Learned wings and how to change his body so he could fly with it. Learned so many different things. Even, once, learned how to change himself just enough to sorta make himself half stool. It had been a very confusing day, okay?
Probably would have learned it all a lot better if he'd had his mother teach him. But he didn't. Didn't have anyone to teach him.
And animals? Never. Closest he ever got was his wings. Which, he supposed, was why he'd jumped SO FAST at the idea of Gar trying to help him out on that. Because he could definitely see the advantage to it. Except it's been an hour and the BEST he's managed was a bunny nose.
Gar is usually a pretty patient person but he’s even getting a little frustrated. After all, Teddy is capable of doing way more things than Gar is and this seems to elude him. And it’s hard for Gar to explain how to actually transform. He can wax on at length about what it feels like to be a tiger, but to explain how he becomes the tiger? It’s hard.
He has to admit, though, Teddy looks dang cute with a bunny nose. Gar sighs and he’s not giving up, at least he won’t until Teddy wants to.
“Are you really focusing on what it would feel like to be the bunny, though?” He questions because that’s a big thing for him there’s a merge of himself and what a tiger is. The power of its muscles, it’s instincts and the amazing way it feels to roar.
Tigers are his favorite, huh? Well, what's the animal that he likes the most? That's a good question. Maybe he could try that. He bites his lips as he considers it a bit.
"Well, what if I try a young bear? Not a cub, but not full grown either. Just... yanno, a bear."
"Okay. But like... you have to think about more than just what the bear looks like. You have to think about how powerful its muscles are, its instincts..."
Gar scratches his head because he's not sure how you explain it in a way that makes sense if you're trying to do more than talk about what it feels like to be a tiger or something.
Gar smiles a little as he thinks about it. He's explained it once to Rachel. Mostly people don't seem to care or think about it so he's not had to explain it all that often.
But he can't think of another way to describe it than how he'd first done it.
"Close your eyes... take a deep breath," Gar says. "Imagine there's electricity running through your whole body. It doesn't hurt. It just feels like.... you're plugged into something."
Gar's smiling, it comes through in his voice. "Then you start to feel strong...and when you breath, it's like you're breathing in the whole world. You feel free, totally free. And you have all that strength, you want to run, you want to jump. You want to break shit. You feel like you can do anything and you want to roar. Not because you're angry but because you want to let it all out. That's what it's like."
Now that is an AMAZING description. One that leaves Teddy just staring in shock and wonder.
"That... wow. That sounds amazing. I wish my transformations were like that. Sounds like an actual experience. Still... maybe I can try that. Try and figure out what a bear might feel like."
“It is...” Gar grins a little and he looks a bit sheepish. The science of it is kind of beyond him somehow he unzips his dna without even really knowing it but he knew how it felt when it happened.
“That’s been what I’ve been trying to say,” he lifts his shoulder, that you have to feel what the animal feels.
Of course it is. But Teddy smiles as he closes his eyes and thinks. And FEELS. And CONSIDERS. And while he doesn't make it all the way, there is definitely green fur moving over him, and his hands are looking more paw-like. His face doesn't quite make the shift though.
It was something, but it wasn't HELD. And Teddy was usually good at holding things pretty much indefinitely. For him changes were pure conscious choice. He was supposed to have control.
Hunk had been running a few errands in the down before his shift at the Haven. He'd been getting used to the stark difference between the Up and the Down since having been contracted, but he's not too put off by the contrast anymore, especially since he considers his job at the Haven to be lending a helping hand to those in need. Everyone deserves a plate of hot food, and he'd been steadily providing that from the Haven's kitchen.
It keeps him in high spirits as he passes by a person he hasn't seen before. The green hair is definitely new.
Gar's still definitely not used to anything here yet. He's trying and he's made a couple of friends and well that helps if nothing else but still. This is a lot to adjust to.
"Hey," Gar grins at the guy. "Thanks," he brushes his fingers through his hair without thinking through the action. And then because making friends is a good thing he offers quickly. "I'm Gar."
[He nods, remembering what it was like to be a new arrival in the Down.]
Have you been to the Haven yet? It's a hospital shelter food kitchen type thing. I work there part time in the kitchen. You could stop by for a bite if you want.
[ Gar shook his head. He hadn't ventured much of anywhere unless he'd absolutely had to. It isn't so much that he was afraid as that he was trying to process everything and well that was easier without adding more things in to process. ]
That'd be great actually... [ He smiles. ] Thanks.
Yeah. [ Gar agrees readily. There's any number of people in his life who would just face palm at his willingness to trust someone he'd just met not to be tricking him. ]
[Hunk doesn't quite consider how weird it seems to ask a random new guy to accompany him to his place of work so he can feed them, but he still hasn't forgotten how the first thing he'd expressed to the network was where to get a decent bite to eat. And since everyone is welcome at the Haven hospital, he sees it as paying it forward.]
When I got here, Haven was the first place someone suggested I go for a hot meal. You gotta have something when you're plopped into a new world with just a mini fridge and a microwave.
[ It certainly makes sense. There's just a lot of people Gar knows that would be a lot less trusting of someone who seemed well-intentioned with no motive for needing to be. ]
Yeah. I don't think I've had any half decent food since I got here. [ Gar admits, not that he'd tried particularly hard to find any either... ]
So, how long ago did you get here? Y'know there's a garden on the rooftop of the submissive public housing, if you ever want something fresh, but cooking it is another story.
